Jacking up the Kitchen

February 13, 2008

Failed to mention that we started jacking up the kitchen Saturday. Its been annoying me that it slopes and the advice from others was to shim the floor or pour a leveling cement in the kitchen! However the way the kitchen was built (as a seperate addition) and that it was the far outside corner that was low, I was convinced that it could be jacked up. I mentioned it to Jimmy and when I told him it was 3 inches low he said ‘woo ee, i dont know about that’. Yet, Saturday we tore some siding off the outside and saw that the corner was deteriorated and that it quite possibly just sank over time. So we started jacking and got it up a good 1.5 inches. It was getting late and we didnt have and good footing to support the floor anyway so we left it there. Thats why the new footing is going it, so we can raise it the rest of the way and support everything properly. I’m excited about it since it means the floor will not need any goofy shimming.

Kitchen Footings

February 13, 2008

I dug the hole for the footing today. That was a blast, 3′ of space to swing a pick axe and shovel. But after about 4 hours with many breaks in between, I got it done. It needed to be 12 inches deep and 16 inches wide and it goes back about 8 feet. I’ll upload a picture tomorrow when its poured. footing2.jpg

2/11 – 2/17

February 13, 2008

By Tuesday the footings need to be dug (done) and poured by Wednesday…weather permitting. Jimmy will be back out Saturday and we are jacking up the kitchen and putting in new 6″x6″ treated supports. I will also have him frame in the master bathroom ceiling. That wasnt done last weekend. I hope to have the last ceiling washed (dining room) and have the new outlet and switch boxes installed by the weekend. Purchasing the plaster tomorrow and working on other odds and ends throughout the week. Dana is still gone so it may be a bit slow but i’ve recruted some labor for a few projects.
