Cleaner and more organized

March 30, 2008

Having removed all the old wires and boxes last week the attic is a better place. It could still use a little vacuuming. But besides that, the wires are organized and safety is no longer a concern. Insulation can now be installed when we are ready.

Update for this week.

Electrical: The electrician came out Tuesday and Dana assisted for the afternoon and finished wiring all the baseboard outlets. That leaves us to add a few more circuits in the kitchen, put the outlets on the boxes, pigtails on the remaining ceiling lights, wire for the hot water heater and connect the front porch lights. That will finish our electrical, bringing the whole house up to code. – About 4 hours of extras to be finished in the next week 4/20

Plumbing: I never did include the story of the plumber, basically he showed up quite late one Sunday Dana and I were tired and about finished. When I told him we were done, I believe he thought I was mad and didnt come back. I could have called him except that he prefers to be free of modern distractions, such as a phone, checking account and personal address. You can reach him by radio or personal contacts…so while sending out signals to get him back we interviewed a few more plumbers. One after the other showed up with prices of $300 to $400 per water hookup. Having 10 hookups thats well $3000 to $4000. Most of these guys had no work for the next day, but refused to lower their prices, which is fine for them, not for us. After 2 weeks our plumber got the message, called me from Home Depot and showed up to continue. As of tonight we will have all of the water hookups below the house. And this coming week we will be connecting them together below the house.

This means our showers, toilets and sinks are roughed in inside the house. And will be completely roughed in when they are connected below. – Finished 4/17

3/17 – 3/24

March 25, 2008

Time flys when you don’t update the website. The previous week was not as productive as anticipated, I know youre reading this and thinking ‘I figured so’, here’s the wrap. Bartered with an electrician, he brought his radio and some tools cancelled the second day and never returned. Turns out ‘barter is not smarter’.

We then called, interviewed and hired a second electrician, he showed up Saturday, worked by the hour and let me Rob help him out to save time. In 8 hours we removed a HUGE pile of old wire and boxes and wired ALL the lights and wall switiches for the whole house. This involved crawling through the attic and fishing wire through the walls. Jim the electrian was very quick and very thorugh. So the kitchen, dining, bookshelves, living, entryway, entryway closet, front porch and master bedroom are now wired for lights and walls switches. Tomorrow (Tuesday 3/25) we will wire all the base outlets in those same rooms. That will finish the house and bring it up to code. There of course will be a few odds and ends to finish, but for the most part it will be done.

The base outlets are located in the 8″ base. So by re-wiring those we can then strip the floors and trim in all of the ‘old’ part of the house. It then means in the old part the walls are plastered and sanded, ceilings caulked and primed, crown molding up, electrical working with new wire, and trim and base installed.

Now the story on the plumber….

<who wrote the message below, its not even close to correct, perhaps it was a dream and put in as a post>

This week should turn out quite well. The electrician is starting Wednesday and plans to have everything finished by Saturday. And by everything that means the whole house! We are plastering the living room Thursday and then crown may go up in the Dining, Living and Master bedroom. If the wood floor is delivered by Saturday, Jimmy plans on installing that. We now need the plumbing roughed in, our holes are cut and everythings ready, just need the person who knows how to make the water magic happen.

Jimmy and his guys came out over the weekend and did a little touch up work to the kitchen floor and outside wall. He also finished the outdoor soffit that i never got to. Then they wired the entire back area and put up our two bath fans.

Dana and I finished plastering the dining room on Friday. We are actually getting pretty good, it looks better every time, this time there are very few flaws.

Kandice finished the caulking the living room ceiling.

I moved the three hvac vents after dana cut the new holes. We have just one vent left then needs some adjusting.
